Mental math multiplication strategies
Two-digit multiplication can be solved in several mental math ways. The image below compares useful strategies such as splitting numbers into tens and ones, rounding to friendly numbers, adjusting with subtraction, and thinking on a number line.
1. Split numbers into easy parts
For 23 x 47, split 23 into 20 + 3 and 47 into 40 + 7. Then calculate smaller products such as 20 x 40, 20 x 7, 3 x 40, and 3 x 7. This is a reliable mental math multiplication method because every step stays simple.
2. Round, then adjust
Some numbers become easier when you round first. For example, 46 x 38 can be viewed as (50 - 4) x (40 - 2). You use friendly numbers first, then subtract or add the adjustment. This is useful for faster two-digit multiplication practice.
3. Choose the method that fits the numbers
If a number is close to 30, 40, or 50, rounding may be fastest. If both numbers are ordinary, splitting into tens and ones is often safer. Try both styles in Mentalc to build flexible calculation habits.
