How to calculate single-digit addition and subtraction mentally

Single-digit addition and subtraction are easier when the numbers are visible. Use dots, small groups, and number bonds to understand what is being added or taken away before trying to answer quickly.

1. Add by joining two small groups

For 4 + 3, first see 4 as one group and 3 as another group. When the groups are joined, the total becomes 7. This makes addition feel like combining objects, not guessing a memorized answer.

1. Add by joining two small groups

2. Subtract by taking away what you can see

For 6 - 2, imagine 6 dots and remove 2 of them. The dots left behind show the answer: 4. This visual subtraction method is useful before speed practice.

2. Subtract by taking away what you can see

3. Break the number into parts

For 8 - 5, think of 8 as 5 and 3. If 5 is taken away, 3 remains. Number bonds help subtraction become a quick mental math pattern.

4. Practice short sets in Mentalc

Start with a small number of questions and focus on seeing the groups clearly. As the patterns become familiar, your single-digit addition and subtraction speed will improve naturally.
